It also highlights the translocal connections between residence, work and urban dwelling in Vietnam and East London. Drawing upon members’ personal stories, I look at their journeys of migration and experiences of arrival in East London, framing the empirical materials inside ideas of navigation and concrete studying. Alongside a recognition of the position of town inside migrant experiences of home, I argue that individuals re-form the town by way of their everyday mobilities and practices of dwelling. The thesis examines connections between home and work in Vietnam, drawing upon understandings of the Vietnamese house as a site of connection to other locations and between dwelling family members, ancestors and the spirit world.

Since 1969, Inn-Town Homes has provided OSU college students with excessive-quality, safe condo housing close to The Ohio State University’s major campus. This thesis examines relationships between home, work and migration for Vietnamese individuals in East London.
My deconstruction of this phenomenon will body the metropolitan aesthetics that emerge from these processes as ‘third space’ (Bhabha 2004, 55-56). I will critically discuss the processes of “urban meets conventional’ workshops and body them as a framework of re/manufacturing through which the youth negotiate native dance traditions and international dance forms to create an embodied aesthetic throughout the locales of urbanity. I will also look at how the areas the place ‘urban meets traditional’ dance actions take place act as an extension of the embodied aesthetics and concrete character.
While such approaches have been important for problematizing hegemonic mobilizations of “residence”, there is additionally a danger in reading motion as constitutive of the (post)trendy world. In specific, such frameworks typically overlook the experiences of those who are forcibly displaced. Critical investment in tropes of migrancy could unwittingly recycle imperialist assumptions by producing imagined areas of alterity that serve to liberate the centred, “at home” topic on the expense of historicized experiences of homelessness. Abdulrazak Gurnahs 2001 novel By the Sea represents one such historicized experience, that of its protagonist, asylum seeker Saleh Omar. This article argues that, through its narrative investment in houses and household objects and in the importance of narrative for creating a way of home for its migrant protagonist, Gurnahs novel poses a challenge to an aesthetic valorization of displacement.
