This article makes an attempt to reinvigorate discussion across the residence–homelessness relationship by problematizing the binaries in present understandings and poses a special means of theorizing the interplay between the 2 concepts. Drawing on interviews with ladies accessing homelessness services in the North of England, dialogue interweaves ladies’s meanings of house and homelessness with the Freudian notion of the ‘unheimlich’. The ‘unheimlich’ captures the uncanny process of inversion whereby the familiar home sphere of the house turns into a daunting place; and a typical area of homelessness—the hostel—is considered home. The article seeks to contribute extra adequate theoretical instruments for future research to better perceive and articulate the complexities of residence and homelessness.

It also highlights the translocal connections between residence, work and urban dwelling in Vietnam and East London. Drawing upon individuals’ personal stories, I examine their journeys of migration and experiences of arrival in East London, framing the empirical materials within ideas of navigation and urban studying. Alongside a recognition of the function of the city within migrant experiences of home, I argue that participants re-shape the town through their everyday mobilities and practices of dwelling. The thesis examines connections between house and work in Vietnam, drawing upon understandings of the Vietnamese residence as a website of connection to other places and between dwelling relatives, ancestors and the spirit world.
